filming what connectivity really does
Mawingu × Microsoft
connectivity · digital inclusion
In 2013, Microsoft’s 4Afrika initiative and a Nanyuki ISP called Mawingu began a bold experiment: TV white spaces and solar-powered base stations delivering affordable internet to communities the grid had left behind. A decade on — through the Microsoft Airband Initiative — that experiment had grown into Kenya’s largest rural ISP, connecting special needs schools where AI and assistive technology were changing what education could be. The partners needed more than a report on this impact. They needed it witnessed — a film that could carry the story from a Machakos classroom to a global audience.
