Kenya’s Media Mix in 2026 – Digital and Traditional Media Work Better Together

The media debate has been framed as a fight for too long
An earlier Dotsavvy article argued that digital media was overtaking traditional media because it was affordable, measurable, interactive, mobile and increasingly aligned to audience behaviour.
Those forces remain important. The 2026 evidence supports a more useful conclusion: digital and traditional media are becoming interdependent.
The Communications Authority of Kenya’s audience research for the third quarter of the 2025/26 financial year reported radio reach at 74%, television at 73%, internet use at 57%, newspapers at 15% and magazines at 5%.
Radio and television remain giants. The internet is now a major layer that reshapes what happens before, during and after exposure to them.
One person, several media behaviours
A listener may hear a radio conversation and search the guest. A television viewer may discuss a programme on social media. An outdoor message may lead to a QR code, search or WhatsApp enquiry. A creator may make a complex campaign culturally legible to a specific community.
Planning only by channel misses the journey.
Use each medium for the job it does best
Mass media can create shared awareness and legitimacy quickly. Search captures intent. Social media supports discovery, conversation and community. Online video provides depth, demonstration and replay. Messaging enables direct service and sales. The website provides durable evidence and conversion. Mobile money can complete the transaction.
The mix should follow the audience, objective, geography, language, creative idea and measurement opportunity.
Build one idea with channel-native executions
Integration does not mean placing the same asset everywhere. A strong campaign has one coherent proposition expressed according to each medium’s behaviour.
The radio execution needs to work in sound. The outdoor message needs immediate comprehension. The social execution needs a reason to participate or share. The landing page needs evidence and a next step. The service team needs context when enquiries arrive.
Measure the connected effect
Use reach and frequency where appropriate, but connect them to search demand, site traffic, enquiries, sales, store visits, service contacts, sentiment and brand measures.
Use geographic or time-based tests where possible. Keep campaign taxonomy consistent. Ask customers how they discovered the brand when attribution is incomplete. Treat platform reports as inputs, not the whole truth.
Digital has not made every traditional channel obsolete. It has made isolated planning obsolete.
